These are the 4 things that control every photo. Master these and you'll never shoot in Auto again.
๐ Aperture (f-stop)
What it does: Controls how much light enters AND how blurry the background is. Low number = more blur + more light. High number = everything sharp + less light.
X-T4 dial: The aperture ring is on your lens barrel. Turn it.
โฑ๏ธ Shutter Speed
What it does: Controls how long the sensor is exposed. Fast = freeze motion. Slow = motion blur / light trails. Also affects brightness.
X-T4 dial: Top-right dial on the camera body. Set to "A" for auto shutter speed (Aperture Priority mode).
๐ถ ISO
What it does: Sensor sensitivity to light. Low ISO = clean image, needs more light. High ISO = brighter but introduces grain/noise.
X-T4: ISO dial is under the shutter speed dial โ lift and turn. Or set to "A" and let the camera pick.
โ๏ธ Exposure Compensation
What it does: Overrides the camera's brightness decision. Use when the camera gets it wrong (too dark/bright). The dedicated dial on the X-T4 top plate is your best friend.
Pro tip: For portraits, dial +0.3 to +0.7 to brighten skin. For moody shots, go -0.7 to -1.
Tap a scenario. Set the dials. Shoot. Each one tells you exactly what to do on your X-T4.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ Family / Kids Portraits
โผShutter dial โ A. Lens aperture ring โ f/2.8. ISO dial โ A (set max 3200 in menu). Focus mode โ AF-C (continuous) for moving kids. Use face/eye detect AF. Exposure comp dial โ +0.3 for brighter skin.
Switch to CH (continuous high burst) on the drive dial. Use zone AF or wide/tracking AF. The X-T4's IBIS handles the rest.
๐ Golden Hour / Sunset
โผShutter dial โ A. Aperture โ f/8 for maximum sharpness across the frame. ISO โ 160 (base, cleanest). Exposure comp โ -0.7 to keep the warm tones rich and not blown out.
Use Velvia for punchy saturated sunsets, or Classic Chrome for a more muted cinematic vibe.
๐ Night / Low Light
โผOpen the aperture as wide as your lens goes. Let ISO auto handle the noise โ the X-T4 is solid up to 6400. IBIS gives you ~6 stops of stabilisation so you can hand-hold down to ~1/15s. Use single point AF.
If you want light trails from cars, switch shutter to 1โ4 seconds (manual), use a tripod or rest on something, ISO 160, aperture f/8โ11.
๐ฝ๏ธ Food & Flat Lay
โผShoot near a window for natural light. f/2.8 for that creamy blur behind the plate. f/4 for flat lays where you want more in focus. White balance โ Daylight or Shade (warmer). Avoid direct flash โ it kills food photos.
โ๏ธ Travel / Street
โผf/5.6โ8 keeps most of the scene sharp. Auto ISO handles changing light as you walk. Set minimum shutter speed to 1/125 in the ISO Auto menu so nothing is blurry. Zone AF works great for street.
Classic Chrome is the GOAT for street/travel. Muted, filmic, looks incredible straight out of camera.
๐ Sports / Action
โผShutter dial โ 1/1000 or faster. Lens aperture ring โ A. Focus mode โ AF-C with zone or wide/tracking. Drive dial โ CH for burst. This freezes anything.
๐ธ Macro / Close-up
โผAt close distances, depth of field is razor thin. f/2.8 on a close-up means only a sliver is sharp. Stop down to f/5.6โ8 so more of the subject is in focus. Use single point AF and manual focus assist (focus peaking) if needed.
๐ Events / Parties (Indoor)
โผWide aperture lets in max light. Face/eye detect AF โ on. WB โ Auto (indoor lighting is unpredictable). Bump exp comp to +0.3 so faces aren't muddy. If using flash, bounce it off the ceiling, never direct.
๐๏ธ Landscape
โผf/8โ11 is the sweet spot on Fuji lenses for edge-to-edge sharpness. Base ISO 160 for cleanest files. Use the 2-second timer or remote to avoid camera shake. Dynamic Range โ DR200 to recover highlights in bright skies.
๐ฌ Video (4K)
โผShutter speed = double your frame rate. Shooting 30fps โ 1/60. Shooting 24fps โ 1/50. This gives natural motion blur. If it's too bright outside, you'll need an ND filter to keep this shutter speed. Use F-Log for maximum editing flexibility, or Eterna film sim for a cinematic look straight out of camera.
IBIS is solid for handheld. Turn it on in menu โ IS Mode โ Stabilisation. For walking shots, consider a gimbal or use post-stabilisation.

Gritty, contrasty black and white with visible grain. Looks like classic street photography film. The yellow filter (+Ye) darkens skies and lifts skin tones. High clarity and pushed highlights give it bite. Switch to this when you want drama.
๐น 23mm f/2 @ f/5.6โ8 โ Street photography, urban walks โ the classic combo
๐ธ 27mm f/2.8 โ Discreet street shooting, the pancake keeps you low-key

Maximum colour pop. Sunsets explode, greens are lush, blues are deep. This is not subtle โ it's bold, saturated, and looks like a postcard. No grain keeps things clean for landscapes where you want maximum detail.
๐ถ 18-55mm @ 18mm, f/8โ11 โ Landscapes, national parks, mountain views
๐น 23mm f/2 @ f/8 โ Sunset beach shots, wide scenic views
๐ท 50mm f/2 @ f/5.6 โ Compressed landscape layers, garden details
Avoid using this for portraits โ the heavy saturation makes skin tones look unnatural. Stick to C1 or C2 for people.

Cyberpunk energy. Cool blue push in the white balance makes neon and city lights pop with a futuristic teal/magenta split. Max colour saturation (+4) and strong Color Chrome FX Blue turns any night cityscape into something special. The grain is off to keep high-ISO night shots as clean as possible.

โก Always Shoot JPEG + RAW
The recipes give you finished JPEGs straight out of camera โ no editing needed. But shooting RAW alongside means you can always re-process later if you want. Set Image Quality โ Fine + RAW in the IQ menu. Storage is cheap. Regret isn't.
Your 5 lenses cover almost everything. Here's when to grab each one and how to get the best out of it.
๐น XF 23mm f/2 WR (35mm equiv)
โผThis is your "leaving the house" lens. The 35mm equivalent field of view is how your eyes naturally see the world. Perfect for street photography, travel, environmental portraits (person + surroundings), and everyday documenting. Small, light, weather sealed โ chuck it on and go.
Street: f/5.6โ8, Auto ISO, zone AF. Set and forget โ almost everything will be sharp.
Environmental portraits: f/2โ2.8 to separate the person from background while showing context.
Indoors/low light: f/2 wide open, Auto ISO (max 6400). Fast enough for handheld in dim restaurants and bars.
Slightly soft wide open at f/2 in the corners โ totally fine for portraits and street, but stop to f/4 if you need edge-to-edge sharpness. AF is fast and near-silent. The close focus distance (22cm) means you can get surprisingly close to subjects.
๐ธ XF 27mm f/2.8 WR (41mm equiv)
โผYour "pocket camera" lens. At 84g and almost flat, the X-T4 + 27mm fits in a jacket pocket. The 41mm equiv is between wide and normal โ extremely versatile. This is the lens that should make you grab the Fuji instead of your iPhone 17 Pro Max. It's barely bigger but the image quality gap is massive.
Casual everyday: f/4, Auto ISO, AF-C with face detect. Point and shoot mentality.
Snapshots at events: f/2.8 wide open for max light, Auto ISO (max 6400).
Landscape/travel: f/5.6โ8, ISO 160 for maximum sharpness.
f/2.8 max means less background blur than your f/2 primes โ don't expect creamy bokeh, this lens is about sharpness and portability. It's surprisingly sharp even wide open. No aperture ring on older versions (uses command dial instead), but the WR Mk II version has one.
โญ XF 35mm f/2 WR (53mm equiv)
โผYour "do everything well" lens. 53mm equiv is the classic normal focal length โ not too wide, not too tight. Incredible for portraits (head & shoulders), family gatherings, and any time you want a natural perspective with nice background separation. This should be your most-used lens.
Portraits: f/2โ2.8 for beautiful bokeh. Face/eye AF on. Exp comp +0.3 for brighter skin.
Family events: f/2.8โ4, AF-C for moving kids. Gets the subject sharp with the background melted away.
Product/detail shots: f/4โ5.6 for a bit more depth, single point AF.
Razor sharp from f/2.8 onwards. At f/2 it's still sharp in the centre but slightly softer edges โ which actually looks great for portraits (natural vignette feel). AF is fast and quiet. Beautiful rendering and colour. This lens + Classic Chrome film sim is chef's kiss.
๐ท XF 50mm f/2 WR (76mm equiv)
โผYour "make someone look amazing" lens. The 76mm equiv is the classic portrait focal length โ flattering compression, gorgeous background blur, and enough distance from the subject that they're not uncomfortable. This is the lens for headshots, couple photos, and any time you want that professional, creamy bokeh look.
Headshot portraits: f/2 wide open for maximum blur. Eye AF is critical here โ the depth of field is thin.
Couple/duo shots: f/2.8โ4 so both faces are sharp.
Candid from distance: f/2, Auto ISO. The reach lets you capture natural moments without getting in people's faces.
Food close-up: f/2.8 gives stunning shallow depth โ isolates the dish beautifully.
Bokeh is the smoothest of all your lenses โ silky backgrounds at f/2. At 76mm equiv you need to stand further back, so tight spaces (small rooms) can be tricky. Minimum focus 39cm is decent for a short tele. Pairs beautifully with the 23mm โ grab both for an event and you're completely covered.
๐ถ XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS (27โ84mm equiv)
โผYour "I don't know what I'll be shooting" lens and your best video lens. The zoom range covers wide to short tele โ you won't miss shots because you had the wrong focal length. The built-in OIS stacks with the X-T4's IBIS for insanely smooth handheld video. This is the lens for travel days where you can only bring one, and for any video work.
Travel all-rounder: Zoom to taste, f/4โ5.6, Auto ISO. You're covered from wide landscapes (18mm) to portraits (55mm) without swapping.
Video: 18โ35mm range at f/2.8โ4, shutter 1/60 (30fps). The OIS + IBIS combo is the smoothest handheld setup you own.
Events where you can't move: Zoom gives you flexibility to frame from your spot. f/2.8 at the wide end is decent for low light.
Landscape: 18mm at f/8, ISO 160. Wide and sharp.
Remember: the max aperture changes as you zoom. At 18mm you get f/2.8, but by 55mm it drops to f/4. This means less light and less bokeh at the long end. It's NOT as sharp as your primes at equivalent focal lengths, but it's very good for a zoom. The convenience factor is massive. For video, this is objectively better than any of your primes because of the OIS + zoom flexibility.

X-T4 specific tricks that'll save you time and make your shots better.
๐ฏ Set Up Custom Profiles (C1โC7)
Save your favourite settings as custom profiles. Go to IQ Menu โ Custom Settings. Save your film recipe + settings for each scenario. Then just switch between them with the Q menu. Family shoot? C1. Street? C2. Done.
๐๏ธ Always Use Eye/Face AF
AF/MF Setting โ Face/Eye Detection Setting โ ON. Pick "Eye" priority. This works in AF-S and AF-C. It's the single biggest improvement for portrait sharpness โ let the camera nail focus on the eye every time.
๐ฑ Auto ISO Min Shutter Speed
Shooting Setting โ ISO Auto Setting โ Min. Shutter Speed. Set this to 1/125 as a baseline. This tells the camera "never go slower than 1/125 when using Auto ISO" โ prevents blurry handheld shots. For action, bump to 1/250 or 1/500.
๐๏ธ Your Film Recipes Are Gold
You've already set up film recipes โ that's half the battle. Keep shooting JPEG + RAW so you get the film sim look instantly but have the RAW as backup if you need to edit later. Make sure to set Image Quality โ Fine + RAW.
๐ Use the Grid & Level
Screen Setting โ Disp. Custom Setting โ Framing Guideline โ Grid 9. Also enable the Electronic Level. Straight horizons = instant professional look. Especially for landscapes and architecture.
โก Back Button Focus
Assign AF to the AF-L button (rear thumb button) and set the shutter button to only take the photo. This separates focus from shooting โ huge for recomposing shots. Button/Dial Setting โ Shutter AF โ OFF, then Function (Fn) Setting โ AF-L Button โ AF-ON.
๐ Battery Life Hack
Set Performance โ Normal (not Boost) unless shooting sports. Turn off Bluetooth when not transferring. Use the EVF primarily (not the rear screen) for longer battery life. Always carry 2 spare batteries โ the X-T4 battery is good but you'll burn through it on long days.
๐ Quick Access: The Q Menu
Press Q on the back to access 16 customisable quick settings. Make sure Film Simulation, White Balance, Dynamic Range, AF Mode, and ISO are in there. This is faster than diving into menus every time.
